John M. Wages
Ms
John brings to the Artemis Institute over 30 years experience working with multidisciplinary teams to apply the tools of biology, chemistry, and physics to biological and medical problems. While at Johns Hopkins, he had the honor of working for a time in the laboratories of the late Dr. Philip E. Hartman, where he became proficient in classical bacterial genetics and standard microbiological techniques, and Dr. Ludwig Brand, where he learned the power of fluorescence technologies to probe the structures, interactions, and conformational dynamics of proteins. Since then, he has developed and applied instrumental methods for the analysis of biomolecules, including electrochemiluminescence, real-time, immunoassay, and capillary electrophoresis methods for the analysis of nucleic acids. He has developed a number of PCR-based assays, for infectious agents and human genetic diseases, and is familiar with methods for long-range PCR, PCR of low-copy and difficult targets, and extremely broad-range PCR, which he has applied to novel virus discovery. He has applied HPLC to the analysis of small molecules and proteins and has developed ion-exchange methods for nucleic acid analysis by HPLC. John has worked for a number of small and medium-sized companies in the life sciences, including AntiVirals, Inc. (now Sarepta Therapeutics) where he established the first diagnostics program to explore the potential of novel antisense morpholino oligos for sequence-specific recognition of RNA and DNA targets. At Genelabs Technologies, he contributed his PCR expertise as part of the team that identified a previously unknown human hepatitis virus. At Applied Biosystems, he developed the first PCR test for fragile X syndrome, which can reliably amplify up to 2,000 CGG repeats. In addition, he has co-founded a number of companies, including Lucidant Polymers (www.lucidant.com; polyacrylamide copolymers for capillary electrophoresis and microarray analysis), CytoMag (www.cytomag.com; rare cell analysis using novel magnetic sifter technology licensed from Stanford), Sophoro Biotechnologies (discovered new-to-nature sophorose analog for high-efficiency induction of gene expression in T. reesei), and others.
